On this patch games tend to go late. PL is very strong late game, one of the strongest in dota. But he also excels in the early game if you are able to have a fast difusal blade, and if you don't, well, you only will get stronger and stronger while the game goes by. He is also good in lane phase, spirit lance is a good nuke, and doppelganger provides you with an escape/disjoint. PL kit is really solid.
IMO he is strong because of diffusal blade. Even his illusions burn out mana completely within seconds. Without mana, any hero is useless.
He’s definitely strong this patch, third highest winrate of the agility carries (only behind 60% winning spec and 54% riki).
A combination of mechanics changes and hero buffs has probably led to it. His talent overhaul in 7.07 was one of the best giving him access to some pretty powerful talents to allow him to transition to a way harder lategame carry than he used to - a 30% chance for double damage crit, plus the fact that it applies to all his illusions is a very big late game buff. The option for plus 900 range phantom rush or 4 extra illusions at level 20 also gives him the option of a massive long range initiation tool or to increase his illusions by 50%.
The stat change thing benefitted him in particular since the faster he attacks the faster he summons illusions. Since phantom rush procs an extra 30 agility for 2 seconds this really means he (plus all illusions) also gets an extra 37.5 attack speed for 2 seconds.
Also had a couple of other small stat buffs including more base regen (double normal heroes) and slightly higher agi stat gain.
Plus there is always the fact that if he is picked into an enemy lineup with little/no AOE clear he can just cleanup in fights with no way for the enemy to clear the illusions.
Other carries are bad. He is a versatile laner, can literally carry a game 1v5 and his counters are kinda shit rn
with spirit lance low cooldown and mana cost, he can zone out any opponent in his lane.
just pack PL with a raindrop and a couple of clarity + ring of aquila, he have sufficient mana to throw out the nukes
you need a coordinated team to catch him, keep him disabled and burst him down before he tursn into 500'000 copies and kills everyone
Right click on him before he doppelgangers. your hero automatically finds the one after the doppleganger. Overall He's very strong I like him.
basically he has no good counter now. Sven being his main counter means its all easy win when he's picked by a pro. Sven's so utter shit right now- infinitely kiteable, ungodly bkb-dependent and unable to fight PL outside godstrength after he's so easily kiteable during the duration using doppelganger.
Sven counter of Pl, what did i just read? Sven is one of the worst hero in the entire game against pl.
And it's not even due to how you kite him, !!you don't even need to kite him!!. you just send an illusion on him.
Sven cann't deal with illusions without his ultimate, that's what make him utterly shit against pl.

I think you havent played dota long enough or your memory is so short term you only know current meta all the time.
Sven is de facto Phantom lancer counter in everyone's mind for a VERY long time. It's only due to how weak sven is now that PL doesnt have a main counter. It's with this mindset that many still pick Sven into PL (AS WE JUST SAW WITH OG VS NEWBEE), and then proceed to lose the game because Sven just doesnt work RIGHT NOW.
It isnt that SVEN isnt the counter. He has been the counter for a LONG time, he just doesnt work right now. This is after talents were implemented and the large number of item changes and introduction made it impossible to depend on sven as a main core for high level games.
idk why but some games where i get good farm with pl i destroy, and some games where i get great farm with pl i cant deal any dmg and im absolutely useless.
he seems like a very situational hero.

actually i played a match as PL in a smurf some hours ago(best way to counter a hero is playing him) and here is what i think:
his fucking third skill is overpowered,30 points in agility for him and illusions are too much to ignore.
And i cant remember what was but i know there was a patch change that made battle fury worse against illusions.
i think he needs a nerf in his third skill,it has to scale worse,giving less agility in the first levels,and his illus are to durable now with battle fury and mjonir nerfs(less attack speed means less procs in light).
Its is allright for him to be strong when drafted right,but i feel he is strong even against heroes that he shouldnt be.
^played radiance lifestealer is because of the miss chance and radiance makes it easier for ls to buy mjollnir
i dunoo if this is just a personal shit but i saw a vp player and gorgc play rad ls against pl and suprisingly roflstomped pl before pl reached his peak, ( I THINK DOTA NOW IS ALL ABOUT WHO's team carry would peak and dominate earlier because people in general have learnt to punish and push advantages)

Pl has 300 nuke with his first skill, he can dispel anything or dodge a lot of stuns with his 2 he can even try jukes with it and finally with his 3 and 4 he can just go on anyone and kill him why shouln't he be strong? and his regen base mana and base hp are very good also he's OP
best hero against pl is leshrac and anti-mage
@CY man, sven is mb in the head of a lot of people, but it's never been a counter of pl (since it's remake).
(and prior the remake, pl was either op as fuck, or utterly shit, so you cann't call counter there).
Back to the remade pl, the only single way for sven to actually do decent against pl, is for pl to play like a brain dead and jump into the fight without having sent illusion onto sven prior to it. If you account for pl player to be dumber than a chair, then yeah, your point is valid, BUT if you consider the pl's player to actually know how to use a mouse & keyboard, then a sven never gonna do anything to pl's.
YES sven suck ball atm, and is probably top5 worst hero, if not top1, but unless you allow sven to actually deal with pl's illusion without his ult (in which case he would need so many buff that he'll become extremely op) he'll never ever do anything to pl.
Edit: for those mentionning lifestealer, the radiance build is a cheese build, you need to win fast for it (usually at 25min the outcome of the game need to be clear)
But there's actually a bf build that win pl lategame aswell (bf,mkb,daedalus,cuirasse+w/e). That's quite risky plan to go for that build, and if you fall behind a little, you'll become a non factor!
AM is kinda dogshit but bins pl generally. Usually other stuff like lesh, bb, axe are good vs pl.
pl max 3rd laning stage solo 1v1 pl sure win lane. high base damage added with 3rd making him super strong early game. succesful laning stage results to ez farm and ez item that will lead to ez game high winrate :) also with the recent patch, games will more likely reach the point where some heroes are now level 25 and pl's lvl 25 talent is very powerful. icefrog really wants long game so that every hero could reach lvl 25 and harness the true power of lvl 25 talents
Magic build with radiance+mjoll and the flame guard talent is fine vs pl, unlike the bfury build you don't explode if the pl ever catches you out either.
both is good, mjo got buffed alot and magical dmg really hurt PL early on, his diffusal no longer dispel your flame guard either.

Played two matches against him,and its like after 30 min he is invincible.
