Why the alarmism? Note how a year after that point in 2015 DotA hits its peak at 1.2 million. Only earlier this year we hit a million players again, there was probably a big patch shake up around that time.
I'm assuming that the consistent metagame and post-TI burn out are the biggest factors in the current slump. We'll have to see the numbers once Outlanders hits for another perspective on DotA's modern peak-playerbase, but the fact that we were at a million only in March makes me fairly unconcerned.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather DotA be developed by a company that seemed to have real management and not Valve. It could be succeeding far more if the on-boarding was better, there was better community interaction and there was actual marketing for the game. The fact that DotA 2 still can rock a million players this far into it's lifetime despite those major flaws is a true testament to the dedication of the DotA playerbase.

Realized I was looking at the Peak Players not the Average. I would say that a shrinking Average playerbase makes total sense considering what I outlined above, Valve's 3 greatest failures when it comes to this game. DotA has withstood the test of time, so even if Valve never gets their shit together, (seems like there's a good chance of that being the case,) they can still keep milking DotA for some years to come.

Tbh, who knows what the long term effects of smurfing, the experiments with ranked, etc etc has had on the playerbase. I know that a lot of people got turned off the last iteration of ranked and are on an extended break. Maybe they'll come back.
I also had a bunch of friends go to Destiny 2 or WOW classic. Some of those will come back too.
Long story short, feels like alarmism to me. Talk to me again if the trend continues downwards consistently for a year.
You guys forgot that AutoChess was largely responsible for the increasing and peak playerbase this start of the year. Now that there are standalone and mobile versions of it, the players and hype dissipated.
recalibration just sucks the joy out of the game for me. they keep rescaling mmr and medals and there's no measure of whether you are improving or not.
that and the quality of games around the start of a new season is crap.
it'd be great if they just gave everyone a percentile for where they are in the playerbase.
I barely even play this fucking game anymore.
Valve thinks it's justified to have low behavior people waste 30 min of their life queuing and even give them a trash match.
They think it's justified to force a person to waste their life away in low prio.
They keep a garbage report system and think that whatever it prints out is RELEVANT in terms of match quality when it fucking isn't.
Hopefully dota dies completely in the next couple of years. This current system is no way to treat people.

unless we can convice 1-200k internet strangers to play hundreds of bot games before queuing for an all pick that would be great but most of them don't really like that
the patch is old already, we have been in 7.22 for over 5 months. there is no way a playerbase will stay at it's peak when there has been so long since the last major patch.
Prolly because of the new matchmaking system and how long it takes to queue for a Ranked game. Plus the behaviour score system is bullshit which isn't a reliable benchmark of a Player's Conduct. The player base will continue to drop with the current matchmaking system I feel. Queue times are extremely long and you're still not sure if you're gonna get a quality ranked match.

It already killed it. We are just diehard dota gamers. If any of the other games out there had the same bullshit report/punishment system, the game would've died out ages ago

We had almost peak playership just this year. The only reason the playerbase is declining is because the patches are dead. I have stopped playing now until they release the next major patch and its the same for a lot of people. You cant expect people to come back and play the exact same game every day for more than a few months.

"forced 50" is not a delusion... if you play well you get matched against stronger opponents/with weaker teammates, if you win that you get flagged as a smurf or a god player and get increased mmr gains ... Not that simple, sure, but it's a thing.

Why are you stuck at ancient with 53 percent win rate? If you are so good shouldnt you be in top 10 immortal players ?. But then you see the top 10 players at immortal and even their win rate is not above 60 percent or 65 percent top.
Keep deluding yourself lol. The same reason you cannot win 10 games in a row on your main account is the same reason anyone cannot win 10 games in a row in their bracket. I can make a new account play with heralds get 10 wins a row and feel pro about it . But that should be the sign of extreme sadness :)

@DumpsterBoy: If it was only this, then the engineers working on the matchmaking algorithm would be unemployed a long time ago.
I won't go in the boring technical details but they correlate much more data than the average MMR of a team.
One official small chimp of data an as example is the behavior score but they take much more criteria in account.
If you are on an undecent winning streak, the algorithm will most likely take it in account in the scoring so the game is 'the most even'.
However, they'll never reveal all the criteria they base themselves on or people will find ways to trick it.
Remember that dota is a game but is business driven as it needs money to sustain. The more time you spend on it, the better it is.
