Been stuck on macs for the last decade because of work but free to go back to pcs now...

Time to build a machine but completely out of touch on what to go for.

I'd like 120/144fps and will also be using the beast for some CAD/CFD but making sure I can get a decent Dota game is number one...

really I guess I'm wondering what cpu, graphics card and monitor I should be getting?

    kalimoo⭕⃤

Ok, one question: Are you going to stream?
If so you should really focus on cpu and ram.

If your not going to stream I do not suggest building a good pc. You should try to not get a good gpu as DotA 2 doesn't need much graphics. Id suggest going for an Intel core I5 maybe 3GHz.

      Lamartine

It depends a lot of how much you want to spend with it

        Rocket

No streaming. Would like to play on full settings at 120hz. I don't play any other games.

          Rocket

Is fps ultimately bottlenecks by cpu for Dota, not gpu?

            Rocket

              assume more money than sense/mmr

If money is no object it's really easy to build a pc, just pick the best of everything

-i7 6800k, or get a haswell one with 6 physical cores if you want to do cad, it might be better.
-a brand name atx mobo with tons of features
-GTX 1080 (or titan if money is REALLY no object)
-a well reviewed 1000 watt psu
-64 gb of ram 16x4 sticks
                -256gb or larger ssd
                -4 tb regular hd
-super expensive and quiet case with a shit ton of fans
                - get a 4k, 240hz monitor as big as you can find.

cost to build a system like that is between $2,000-$2,500 not including monitor or OS. Actually in my search I couldn't find any 4k monitors over 60hz so you might have to choose between a 144hz monitor or 4k. Probably be around $300.

                  not nvidia tesla

                  Rocket

@dire i've already got plenty of large monitors (including a 4k one) but all low Hz. I was going to get a small 144Hz one.

                    Lamartine

You will need a decent CPU and a very good GPU, it will depend of how much money you have but i will recommend for CPU a i7 or a fx 9590 if you prefer AMD. For GPU if you want to play on FHD and highest textures i will assume that you will need something like a 980 geforce or maybe a 1060/1070 if you want new series, 1080 is the new big one but i don't think it's necessary. And of course if u want to play on 120 /144 fps you will need a monitor that can respond for it, i will suggest you to see the gaming monitors like the ASUS roge series or maybe the BENQs, a couple of DDR4...16GB is enough with a high frequency...

                      Dire Wolf

I haven't heard of tesla, I don't really keep up on this stuff except when buying new hardware myself. I just went to tom's and clicked on the best of gpu section.

                        Dire Wolf

I would go with that too, especially if you play at a normal desk like 2-3 feet away from your monitor. Anything over 1080p and 20-24 inches isn't really necessary and you'll just find yourself moving your chair back.

Anything to choose between asus and benq?

                            Lamartine

Yes bro, Asus Rog series and the Benqs are very good stuff, in almost all the E-Sports championships the players are using asus or benqs, they have the special series for gaming, with high frequency response (120/144) ..and are very durable in my opinion anything in this type is a good choice. Go search for reviews on web, there is a lot of on youtube and hardware foruns, good luck and hope u find what you want.

                              Dire Wolf

here I built you one on newegg shopping cart, under 2k, no monitor but has os. The i7 6700k is better for gaming than the ones with more cores cus higher clock but if you do want to do cad and video stuff then consider more cores. If you want to save a few bucks drop the bluray for normal dvd, downgrade the ssd to whatever size you need and drop down to a gtx 1060 or 1070. A 1070 is around $300 so that's a pretty hefty hike. You can get by with a lesser psu too but will only save around $50. And less ram is viable too.

you can get 120 fps with a 980.

just get an i7, 8+ RAM, a 980 or 10xx equivalent, and a SSD if you want the game to load instantly.

You can spend 1500+ for basically top end stuff, or you could build something with 95% the FPS for about 800.

also you can aquire windows 10 for free illegally, but i wouldnt know anything about that.

Mainly dual-listed equities and derivatives. I stopped because the regulatory burden was getting excessive and tedious, my main strategy depended on a tax loophole that was closed, I have two young children and I'd made enough to build my dream Dota machine :-) the final straw was having two children - you can't compete in the markets unless you can give 100% - there are just too many smart people with huge resources for you to have an edge otherwise.

Was fun at the time and cool. Got to play with fpgas and built one of the fastest trading systems out there but those days are mostly over and it takes more than being the fastest now.

Pretty sure the golden age of electronic trading is over mind - I wouldn't get into it now.

Ps I'm no spring chicken - I left uni in 99 and was a trader/broker pretty much continuously until this spring.

Wow, thanks for the detailed response!

I've been trading equities (mostly) in my spare time for 1/2 year, so I am really a noob.

Can I add you on LinkedIn? I wanted to ask some questions later on, if you don't mind

Back on topic: it's got to be an asus pg248q right?

My bro got a dell xps 13 and it seems to be really freaking good. But it's definitely freaking expensive.

Hi Rocket, the PG248 is a very nice monitor, this was used a lot on internacional and other big events, think is a good choice, i think 24'' is ideal but if you want more you can choose from the PG278/79 too. Or like i said before some BENQ with similar quality and especifications.
All this gaming monitors with high response (120/144) is fine, it depends of your preference, or maybe some options that first one have and the other doesn't. Personally recommend you to see some review on web or you can go for an store and see the product before you buy it. Good luck man.

actually tesla doesnt even have a monitor input

                                                          Dire Wolf

ha I dabbled in options and ended up losing like $10k lol. But it was kind of ok because I offset the loss with huge gains just buying apple and netflix stock straight up. Sadly I had to cash out my entire account to purchase a house.

"Ps I'm no spring chicken - I left uni in 99 and was a trader/broker pretty much continuously until this spring."

it sounds really horrible and stressful tbh

It was pretty cool as jobs go. You're basically playing the highest stake computer game in the world. Makes TI pocket change. Shit graphics/sound effects mind...

what do you do now? regular investments/advice?

                                                                Rocket

i'm well and truely retired :)

                                                                  Dire Wolf

                                                                    Rocket

Well it wasn't 'day-trading' - i don't see what someone's edge is in that considering the other participants with better everything - it was a fully-fledged prop trading house and a member of several stock exchanges. we mainly traded arbitrages we found.

i've only ever punted stocks a couple of times and that was back in March 2000 jsut before the tech crash. scarred me for life :)
