General game advice? in General Discussion

Hey guys, just another person asking for advice here.
I've been trying to main support in the past week and it's been going alright, although I've had a few games that were rough, for the most part it has been well. My question is there anything more I can do? Last match as CM I bought everything: All wards sentries, courier, smoke (successful smoke ganks), dust for shadowbladed heroes, and teamfight items such as pipe and the much needed blink. So my question is how do I go above and beyond? I try to do everything to my knowladge such as pulling ganking and giving proper vision for the team. (check last match if you would like)

I'm by no means amazing at the game which is why I am here asking questions and looking for improvement.

    Thanks

You're starting to sound like an average 5k elitist although you're not 5k

@fx(chill) Not sure what that is supposed to mean I know I'm obviously a low level player as stated above and am looking for tips from apparently the hordes of pro players on the forums.
@bws I try but not going to lie not everyone is the best listener if you know what I mean

Most people listen if you do well in the early game, a.k.a flashy pudge hooks, sick ganks, skillshots, lifesaving rotation, making the enemy carry's life miserable, etc
I'm not a support player so I can't give more than that

Basically u dominate the early game. The goal of a support is to never be doing nothing. Know ur role, and know what lanes are weak and what lanes need to be ganked and what lanes can be ganked. Know when to pull and when to zone. It takes a lot of experience tho, supporting for me was very hard. For now, just dont sit in lane doing nothing, especially as cm, u can jungle till like lvl 3,4 against a hard lane and then pop out and gank and shit.

And stick with your carry lategame

Here is some tips from a core player. I really recommend you playing core. Why? If you play core THEN you play support then you know what your carry want and give them what they like. But if you really want to rush to 2k like i did, try spamming cores and learn to to afk farm 25 min and you sre good to be 2k. But until now i havent give you any advice. So here goes.
                        1. Try to not pull when enemy creep is pushing into your tower. This is very important because i see a lot of ns player does that. The only time you do that when your carry dont take too much damage from creep and he feels comfortable farming under the tower.

I recommend you start by watching and analyzing high level support players. Purge is probably your most accessible option as he's a support player himself. There are many mechanics you need to learn to become a proficient support player. Most of them you wont learn by spamming cores as fx suggested. The core position is much simpler compared to a support role. Playing core to learn how to support is not the way of going about it as the picking a support role is already a selfless decision and your game does not revolve around what your carry will and will not like. Half the time they don't know what actually benefits them.

Some things to keep in mind:

Stacking - It doesn't seem nearly as important since the new map but it does accelerate your carrys' farm.

Pulling - Pulling is a greedy move that nets a support player extra gold and much needed XP. The only time it isn't greedy is when the creep equilibrium needs to be controlled, which is usually the core's job. Pull through using the neighboring large camp unless you want to stack the wave for a push. There are many videos of how to do this. You can also pull the wave by using the large creep camp but it wont always kill the wave and it is easily contested by the offlaner.

Smoke ganks - Buy a smoke right off the bat. It is your job as a support to round up 1 or 2 other heroes and gank a lane when the situation arises. When you play CM you should be getting level 2 in the jungle and immediately ganking a lane. This isn't always easy as you'll most often be the solo support in lower brackets and your safelane carry will feel pressured.

Zoning - An important part of safe lane support is zoning out the enemy offlaner as your carry controls the creep equilibrium. This denies the offlaner gold and much needed levels. You wont always be able to zone as many other heroes can trade favorably with you as a support player. For instance, trying to zone a Necrophos or Underlord as CM will be impossible. If it becomes impossible to zone do something else, you have many options. You can look for a potential gank, pull for solo experience and gold (again, this is greedy but it helps your lane more if your carry is getting solo experience), or you can sit in lane and attempt to pressure the offlaner as safely as you can.

Warding/dewarding - Learning when and where to ward is very helpful. Try not to ward in obvious spots. While the marked rune spots provide flying vision they are usually the first places the enemy will check. When it comes to dewarding you have to rely on intuition. For instance, if you move to gank the offlaner and you see them retreat as you approach they may have a ward in the area.

There is so much that I've missed and so much that I can elaborate upon. There are support players that are far above my skill level and I strongly suggest watching them play and seeing what they do in certain situations.
