medal represent your place among others, its like u are divine if u be top 10%, u are legend if u be top 40%, etc.
at the start of season, there is not much calibrated accounts, only ppl who playing dota on daily basis (serious/high mmr players) doing it. therefor if u were top 40% with 3k before u arent now with that mmr, cause mostly high mmr players calibrating now and lower mmr not.
this make u get like 2-3 star lower than last season with same or even higher mmr.
but if u wonder why ppl dropping from ancient to archon, well obviously either buying accs or fake party mmr..
